Could you share a memorable moment or project that showcased the positive impact of your efforts on the lives of women and families in your community?
We have a resident who is graduating from our program at the end of the month. This will be the first time she has ever been sober as an adult and not in an exploitative situation. She will be moving into a place all by herself, working at a job she loves and able to plan and envision a future for herself.
The other day she shared that she was learning to shop for groceries for the first time in her life. She walked into a shop and saw pants she wanted and thought “wait, I know how to make those and I can do it for myself!” She is learning to save, set goals and show up for work. She is choosing to embrace the uncertainty of a new life because no matter what she knows it will be better than the streets.
She is learning how to be loved, be seen, and celebrated. And her greatest goal in life is to be happy and make others happy, and every day she is experiencing a bit more of that.
How do you believe women can leverage their unique skills and strengths to actively participate in events or projects that uplift and protect their communities?
I think women have the innate strength of connecting and uplifting. The greatest gift we can rediscover as women is the home, goodness & wisdom within each of us. Trusting our compassionate core that seeks relationship over productivity, communal thriving over individual success and the slow process over quick gains.
This world can be a cruel place, but there are always helpers, look for those that are on the ground already and see how you can come alongside them, there are always opportunities, we need you!
In your experience, what role does collaboration and unity among women play in achieving sustainable and impactful change within a community?
As my favourite quote by Malala Yousafzai quote goes, “if you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.” We each have something to give, and oftentimes it's the thing we least expect another to need.
Trust yourself and pay attention to when you feel moved by a cause, follow that spark, you have something important to contribute and we need your skills, your resources and your voice.
